I do admit, I have been drawn to looking up old VCS games after watching too many Code Monkeys episodes 😛
This is one of those typical 1980s games, which seems very simple at first glance, but becomes insanely addictive after only a few goes. You have a little space guy with a zap gun running inside a maze. In the maze are a bunch of monsters, who can kill you by shooting or touching you. You begin with some slow blue monsters in the maze; when you kill those, you get faster yellow ones, and then the fastest red ones.
The trick is that you can only have one bullet out at one time. So if you shoot and miss, you need to wait till your bullet hits a monster or wall before you can shoot again. Also, the yellow and red monsters can become invisible. In a nod to pacman, there is a teleport type portal that lets you go from the one edge of the maze to the other quickly; but once you or a monster passes through it, it closes for a few seconds.
This thing is sheer genius. I have been playing it nonstop for hours and it just never gets old. The graphics are among the most horrible ever presented on a C64 screen, but it doesn’t matter. The sounds is like having a dentist drill constantly in your ear, but that too does not matter. You just need to clear one more screen…
To quote: “You need to play this game“.
